Day 1: Economic Growth Sessions
  • Econoic Growth and Social Discrepancy in Asia - David Dollar
I remember reading a World Bank paper about fair trade written by David Dollar when I was preparing for DIS. I ALSO remember thinking how his name goes so well with his workplace, lol. So it was indeed exciting to meet the person who I've only met in papers, IN PERSON! I looooovve this kind of 'family man' ;)

David Dollar said China was the best example of poverty reduction- China saw 1/3 reduction in poverty rate on joining the WTO in 2001. 근데 he also mentioned how this happened in part by endorsing a 'citizen responsibility' policy. But then, he also talked about how the Chinese gov't's decentralized education program is widening the inequality between the urban and rural population...

그러면... how should we balance individual responsibility and social/governmental responsibility in tacking poverty reduction?
Dollar씨에 말로는 China went too far and too fast in adopting privatization; so it needs to find its own balance, not hastily modifying other countries' examples.

  • China's Economic Growh and Health- Chong-En Bai & Li Ling
  • Your Role in CSR - Katherine Vorisek

Inequalities in income vs inequalities in opportunities...
Gini Coefficient. Numbers only tell one side of the story...
On healthcare, Chinese people pay 60% out of their own pockets...
Private sector, especially for MNCs, in their contribution to the local community...
